I've always loved writing, but my reasons have shifted. I loved the whole world of English when I was younger because people told me I was good at it. I labeled transitive verbs in fourth grade, aced spelling tests in seventh grade, and wrote rhetorical analysis essays in eleventh grade. Part of what I liked about writing was having a control on the subject and being able to manipulate my way through it with ease. I churned out pretty standard essays for a long time before I started to feel like I truly loved the art of writing. Joining the Minor in Writing brought me to this place. I finally had the freedom to write in whatever form I wished, and I was pushed to be wholly present in my writing. It had to be personal, and it had to reach people.
This collection of my writing delivers a real, genuine view of who I am as a writer and as a person. I always speak my mind out loud, and I strive to do that in my writing as well. Each time I write a piece, I work to make it come alive. Too often we feel trapped within the confines of requirements, bound by deadlines and grading and expectations. Throughout my time in the minor, I have been working to balance fulfilling requirements with maintaining a personal presence in my writing. For this portfolio, I've chosen pieces that feel truest to my beliefs and most representative of my personality, and I hope that after reading through, you’ll walk away with an idea of who I am. Writing allows me to think, develop, and create, and I love being able to share this process and growth with others.
Within this portfolio, you will find pieces from the Capstone and Gateway courses, as well as other writing from my time here at Michigan. These are my favorite pieces both because they were most fun (and challenging) to write and because I am most proud of them looking back. Please enjoy.
